Windsurfing lessons with certified instructors
Windsurfing has the most technical start of the wind sports and the most immediate reward: you are already sailing in your first session, even if slowly. Each session lasts two to three hours and, as with kiting, learning is planned as a course rather than a one-off lesson.

What you will learn
Your instructor adapts the content to your starting point, but this is the usual progression.
Beginner
Parts of the rig, uphauling the sail, base stance and points of sail. Sailing out and back and tacking without falling.
Intermediate
Using the harness, sail trim, efficient upwind sailing and gybing. First planing runs in moderate wind.
Advanced
Sustained planing in the footstraps, waterstart, planing gybe and wave sailing.

Three or four sessions are usually enough to sail and return to your starting point comfortably. Planing comes considerably later.

Best time of year
From April to October the thermal wind is steadier and the water warmer. Tarifa and Pozo Izquierdo work almost all year; on the Mediterranean the season concentrates in spring and summer.

Safety and qualifications
The main risk in windsurfing is ending up far from shore with no way back, through gear failure or offshore wind. That is why the instructor sets the sailing area, checks the rig before every launch and works with rescue support at the spot. The first rule taught is how to paddle back on the board with the rig secured.
Required qualification
- A current windsurf instructor certification: VDWS or a federation qualification from the Spanish Sailing Federation.
- Current water rescue and lifesaving training.
- Liability insurance covering the activity.
We verify qualifications sport by sport: an instructor can be published for one sport and still under review for another. We also check that their liability insurance covers that specific activity.
