La sierra nevada más próxima a Madrid y, por volumen de visitantes, el mercado de nieve más grande del interior peninsular. Concentra la única estación alpina plenamente operativa de la Comunidad de Madrid (Valdesquí), el nódulo nórdico/raquetas de Cotos-Peñalara dentro del Parque Nacional, el espacio nórdico de Navafría (Segovia) y una estación en desmantelamiento parcial (Puerto de Navacerrada).

Eje alto del Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama: Peñalara (2.428 m, techo de la sierra), Cuerda Larga, Siete Picos, La Maliciosa y el valle de la Fuenfría. Terreno de media montaña muy accesible desde Madrid y Segovia, con nieve consolidada de noviembre a mayo.

    Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama; la vertiente oriental está protegida desde 1990 como Parque Natural de la Cumbre, Circo y Lagunas de Peñalara. La zonificación del Parque Nacional distingue Zona de Reserva (acceso prohibido salvo fines científicos o de gestión), Zona de Uso Restringido (acceso solo por sendas autorizadas; el subtipo A excluye bicicleta y caballo y limita el tamaño de grupo) y Zona de Uso Moderado. La administración puede establecer limitaciones temporales o permanentes por conservación o seguridad. Recibe del orden de 135.000 visitantes al año.
