Extremo occidental del Sistema Central, a caballo entre Salamanca y Cáceres: Peña de Francia y el valle de Las Batuecas al norte, Las Hurdes con sus gargantas y el Meandro del Melero en el centro, y la Sierra de Gata (Jálama, 1.492 m) hacia la frontera portuguesa.
