Dos paisajes contiguos y muy distintos: la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa, con unos 40 conos volcánicos y la Fageda d'en Jordà, y la Alta Garrotxa, 329 km² de relieve calcáreo abrupto con cuevas, barrancos y una de las mayores concentraciones de rapaces del noreste peninsular.

    Espai d'Interès Natural (PEIN) desde 1992, ZEPA desde 2005 y espacio Natura 2000, con 32.875 ha en 11 municipios y gestión del Consorci de l'Alta Garrotxa. Presencia nidificante de águila real, águila calzada y quebrantahuesos: hay que verificar limitaciones estacionales de acceso y de escalada antes de programar.

    Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa: aparcamientos regulados y de pago en los accesos principales, itinerarios señalizados de uso obligatorio y autorización previa para actividades organizadas y grupos grandes, según el régimen general de los parques naturales catalanes. La ruta de les Tres Colades está cortada en Fontfreda por daños de agua.
