Paddleboarding (SUP) lessons

It has the shortest learning curve of any water sport: in a session of about 90 minutes almost everyone ends up standing and paddling. It works on flat sea, estuaries and reservoirs, and comes in three formats: beginner, touring and SUP-yoga.

What you will learn

Your instructor adapts the content to your starting point, but this is the usual progression.

Beginner

Stance on the board, paddle grip and technique, basic turns, and how to fall and climb back on without losing the board.

Intermediate

Efficient paddling over distance, step-back turns, reading wind and current, and planning a short tour.

Advanced

Long tours, swelly water, SUP surfing on small waves and specific balance and core work.

What is included and what you bring

Included in the lesson

  • Board and paddle set to your height
  • Buoyancy aid and leash
  • Wetsuit outside summer
  • The instructor’s liability insurance

What you bring

  • Swimsuit and technical top
  • Towel and dry change
  • Sunscreen and a cap
  • Water

Touring sessions are longer, two to four hours. Each instructor publishes their formats and maximum group size.

How much it costs

No prices published yet

The price shown here will be the real range of the offer published by verified instructors. Until there is offer, we show no figure at all.

Best time of year

Summer is best thanks to warm water and flat early-morning sea. Spring and autumn still work with a wetsuit, especially on inland water and estuaries sheltered from the wind.

Safety and qualifications

Paddleboarding is low risk, but offshore wind is the trap: it pushes you out to sea without you noticing and paddling back against it is exhausting. The instructor checks the forecast before setting out, sets the boundaries of the area and does not go out when the wind blows from the shore.

Required qualification

  • Paddleboarding or surf coach qualification recognised by the relevant federation, or an equivalent international certification.
  • Current water rescue and lifesaving training.
  • Liability insurance covering the activity.

We verify qualifications sport by sport: an instructor can be published for one sport and still under review for another. We also check that their liability insurance covers that specific activity.
